A Clash at the Coliseum
Oakland's own Andre "SOG" Ward will take on Chad "Bad" Dawson September 8 at the O.co Coliseum. The excitement for the fight has been brewing for months, and HBO will be featuring the fight live this Saturday. Both fighters are in their prime, and this not-to-be missed match is said to be a defining moment for both fighters' careers. Look out for celebrity Nick Cannon, emcee for the fight. Fans can also head to Fanfest on Friday at Oakland City Center for a chance to meet the champion boxers before the big night. Get your tickets while they last, and make your reservations at one of the convenient nearby hotels at visitoakland.org/hotels.
Free Summer Fun on the Waterfront
Enjoy the best of Oakland's summer weather with a free waterfront movie, concert, or festival at Jack London Square along Oakland's waterfront. Visitors and locals can enjoy a free screening of a classic movie; this month's features include Fatal Attraction and The Devil Wears Prada. Catch SoundWaves, a free concert held Thursday nights at the foot of Broadway, including bands such as rock group Stone Foxes and R&B/soul singer Joe Bagale. Get fit with a fun group routine from Les Mills, from dance to martial arts to strength exercises. And don't miss the best food festival of the year, the Eat Real Festival, celebrating the best of sustainable, local ingredients.
Mission Creek Oakland Celebrates Local Talent
Get a taste of the East Bay's creative music and arts offerings with the Mission Creek Oakland festival, a celebration of up-and-coming East Bay talent. During the month of September, dozens of cafes and undiscovered venues will feature music from local bands, displays from artists, film nights, and more. The festival, in its fourth year as an extension of the San Francisco festival, gives visitors a taste of the creative arts and entertainment offerings in Oakland, of which there are many. Catch one of these exciting acts at various locations throughout the East Bay, including The Night Light, Ruby Room, The Uptown, Actual Cafe, Cafe Van Kleef, and many more.
Stay in Oakland for Art Happenings
While the monthly Art Murmur in Oakland continues to thrive, make sure not to miss the other art offerings around the city. Head to the Oakland Museum of California to view Valley of Shadows and Dreams, the first of a three-part photography series exploring the Central Valley. Pro Arts will take on two exhibitions divided into two solo shows this fall, titled 2x2 Solos. The Compound Gallery and Studios, home to more than a dozen artists, has opened its space to visitors this month to tour the various art works and experience demonstrations in printmaking, letterpress and ceramics.
